Betty Wright の１st アルバム(1968)。１９５３年生まれということだから，このアルバムを録音した時点で，彼女は１５歳。
手元にあるのは７年ほど前にリイシューされた CD を直輸入盤として日本で発売したもの(英文解説：Tony Rounce，日本語解説：鈴木啓志)。
当時，Betty Wright の初期の作品が CD 化されたのは，彼女が関わった Joss Stone のデビュー・アルバムが評価されたため。
その続編としてリリースされた ↓ でも，彼女は一部の曲にコーラスとして参加している。

ほぼ同時に２枚目と３枚目のアルバムも CD 化されていたが，当時は見送っていた。最近，財布の中身を大して傷めることもなく入手することができたのは，ATLANTIC R&B BEST COLLECTION 1000 のシリーズとして再発されたおかげ・・・m(_ _)m

ヒットした 'Clean Up Woman' が収録された２nd アルバム[1972, R&B Albums: 32, Billboard 200: 123] ではなく，１st を選択したのは，The Box Tops のカバー(6.) や，Sam Cooke との共作というクレジットのある曲(10.) が収録されていたから。
Penn/Oldham が書いたその曲や，Arthur Alexander の曲(3.) を選曲したのは，おそらく，プロデューサである Steve Alaimo 。

↑ で CD 化されているように，Steve Alaimo は Dan Penn の曲をかなり取り上げているし，'Everyday I Have To Cry' を歌ってヒットさせた[1963, Hot 100: 46] のは，彼だった。
'I'm Thankful' という曲について，Steve Alaimo は，３つのバージョンに関わっている。
最初は，本人自身のソロ作。

二度目が表題の CD に収録された Betty Wright のバージョンで，大学時代からの友人だった Brad Shapiro との共同プロデュース。

さらに，その３年後に Betty Wright とのデュエットとしてシングルで発表されたのが，↓。バックトラックは，Betty Wright のソロとほとんど同じだが，全体の完成度はコチラの方が上。
特にエンディングの，二人が絡んだ上にコーラスが加わって盛り上がっていくあたりは，もう少し聴いていたいと思わせるほど。

Patti LaBelle and The Bluebells が Atlantic に残した２枚のアルバムの内の２枚目(1967)。
● V.A. "Saturday Night At The Uptown" [Atlantic WPCR-27600]
アナログでは B 面に当たる 7.〜 11. が ↑ と同時にライブ録音(10. が重複。ただし，このアルバムに収録されたバージョンでは Patti LaBelle 自身が曲名を紹介している部分が含まれている。) されたことになっているが，ひょっとすると，11. は擬似ライブ・・・？
いずれにしても，当時，このコンサートで Patti LaBelle and The Bluebells が複数の曲を歌っていることははっきりしているわけで，そうすると当然 Barbara Lynn も１曲だけであるはずがなく，残りのテープはいったいどうなっているのだろう？・・・という素朴な疑問が生まれてくる。
ここ数年の，Atlantic 時代の Aretha Franklin 関連のテープの発掘状況を見ると，一般的な知名度は低く，Atlantic に所属していた期間も短いが，Barbara Lynn のテープも保存されていても不思議ではないような気がするのだが・・・。
Unissued のテープの発掘以上に望まれるのが，Not on LP だったシングル曲の CD 化。
その一部は，もう２０年近く前に Ichiban というレーベルから編集盤 CD の形でリリースされたことがあるけれども，いずれも廃盤。
今の技術なら，当時よりも高音質で迫力のある，よりシングル盤に近いサウンドでデジタル化できるはずだが・・・m(_ _)m

表題のアルバムより前，Atlantic に移籍して最初にリリースしたアルバム(1966) も，ATLANTIC R&B BEST COLLECTION 1000 のシリーズとして，千円ポッキリで入手できるようになっている。
オーケストラをバックにしたスタンダード曲集で，Bert Berns のプロデュース。Keen や RCA 初期の Sam Cooke の良さが分かる人なら，十分楽しんでいただけるはず。

１９６４年７月に行われたコンサートの実況録音盤。
This LP is recorded in its entirely at The Uptown Theatre in Philadelphia, Penna. というクレジットがあるのでダビングなどは行われていないようだが，とにかく，聴衆の熱狂振りが尋常ではない・・・と感じるのは，彼の地を遠く離れた場所で異なる時代を過ごしてきたからだろうか・・・？
同じ ATLANTIC R&B BEST COLLECTION 1000 でリイシューされた ↓ と比べても雰囲気はかなり異なっているし，

ヨーロッパで録音された ↓ に比べると，聴衆のノリそのものが違っているように聞こえる。

表題のアルバムについて，アマゾンの内容紹介だと「日本初 CD 化」となっているが，これは「世界初」のはず。
ATLANTIC R&B BEST COLLECTION 1000 としてリイシューされた１００枚の中で，まず注目したのがこの CD だったが，The Drifters の編集盤 CD に収録されていた同じライブ録音を聴いて，さらに興味が湧き，リリースが待ち遠しかった。
このアルバムに対する唯一の不満は，「・・・コレだけか・・・？ テープは残っていないのか・・・？」ということだけ。もしテープが発掘されたら，ぜひ完全版で聴いてみたい・・・m(_ _)m
聴き所はいっぱいあるが，個人的にオススメなのは，
4. リードを取っている Charles Thomas が，オリジナルの Ben E.King よりも Sam Cooke しているところ。
6. The McCoys 'Hang On Sloopy' のオリジナル曲。
9. Atlantic に移籍したばかりの Wilson Pickett のこの時期のライブは貴重。ストーンズがカバーしたのは，Solomon Burke のバージョン だったが・・・。
13. ストーンズがカバーした この曲のシングル の B 面曲 'Unfair' の，作者によるデモ録音が ↓ で聴けるようになった・・・(^_^)v

アルバム・タイトルには "New Orleans 〜" とあるが，録音されたのは,１９７７年１１月２７日，the Boogie Woogie and Ragtime Piano Contest, Zurich, Switzerland における演奏。
「悲劇の天才」シンガーが Little Willie John なら，「悲劇の天才」ピアニストと言えるのが，この James Booker 。
その最期(1939-83) は，「チャリティ・ホスピタルにかつぎこまれ，廊下の車椅子に乗せられたまま，ほったらかしにされ」，「病院側が異状に気づいたとき」には「もう手遅れだった」そうだ。(p.357 『フードゥー・ムーンの下で』ドクター・ジョン，ジャック・ルメル 共著 森田義信 訳 ブルース・インターアクションズ 刊)
Dr.John の自伝的な内容の同書を読むと，James Booker は，そういう風に「ほったらかしにされ」ても仕方がないような，世間一般の目から見れば「最低」の人間だったが，そんな James Booker が生み出した音楽には，究極・至高の美しさがあった。
アル中でジャンキーというのは，ぼくの好きなシンガーやミュージシャンの中にゴロゴロしているが，彼は異常性愛者でもあった。ぼくは同性愛者に対しても偏見は持っていないつもりだが，彼の行状は，あの Dr.John にさえ 「ブッカーは嫌と言うほど私の神経を衰弱させてくれた」(同書 p.341-) と言わしめるほど。その一方で，Dr.John は，次のようにも語っている。
「やつは天才だった。私の人生の中で，会えてよかったと心から思えるやつをひとりだけ挙げるなら，それは，ジェイムズ・キャロル・ブッカーだ。」(同書 p.358)
Neville Brothers の末弟 Cyril Neville による 「彼は心の病を抱えてた人間だけど，音楽の世界を変えた数々のピアノ奏者の誕生の地であるニューオーリンズも，ジェイムズ・ブッカーを超える人物は生んでいないんじゃないかな。」(p.427 『魂の宿る街ニューオーリンズからーネヴィル・ブラザーズ自伝ー』デイヴィッド・リッツ 共著 石山淳 訳 ブルース・インターアクションズ 刊) という最大級の賛辞も残っている。
James Booker とは正反対の，完全無欠であることが唯一の欠点と思えるような Harry Connick,Jr. は，'Let Them Talk' をカバーしたとき，'I guess I thought he wrote it, probably because he sang it so personally.' とコメントしていた。

↑ のようなトリビュート・アルバムも作られているが，それには収録されていない Harry Connick,Jr. が捧げた ↓ が感動作。

表示されるスライド・ショーが曲の雰囲気を上手く表現している。
ドラムやギターも含めて全ての楽器を Harry Connick Jr. が演奏していて，尊敬するミュージシャンである James Booker を救えなかった自分自身に対する怒りと同時に，有り余る才能を持て余して自滅してしまった James Booker に対する怒りも込められているような気がする。
...And now you know why Booker died of a broken heart というリフレインが印象的。

大ヒット[R&B Singles: 1, Hot 100: 2] した 'Tell It Like Is' の共作者の一人である Lee Diamond は，The Upsetters のメンバーだった Wilbert Smith の変名。
その曲で演奏しているミュージシャンについて，表題の CD などにはクレジットはなかったのだけれども，↓ のボックス・セット付属のブックレットによると，

Copa や Harlem Square Club のライブでドラムを叩いていた Albert "June" Gardner が leader & drums として録音した曲を集めた CD 。
Harlem Square のバックで演奏しているミュージシャンについて，よく「 King Curtis のバンド」と表現されることがあるが，リズムをキープしアクセントをつけるドラマーは，Sam Cooke のバンドのメンバーだった。June Gardner は，１９６０年頃に Sam のバンドに加入している。
この CD のジャケ写は，タバコの広告に使われた写真をトリミングしたもので，左のタバコを持っている人物は Sam Cooke，右側の左利きのギタリストは Bobby Womack。同じ写真のタバコを消したものが，DVD "LEGEND" で使用された。
1.〜 11. は，１９６６年にリリースされた LP ↓ の収録曲。

ホーン・セクションが大人数だけあって，ビッグ・バンド並みに分厚いサウンドになっている。特に，The Mar-Keys のカバーである 'Last Night' をオリジナルと聞き比べてみると，Youtube のチープな音でもその「分厚さ」がかなりはっきり分かる・・・？ June Gardner のバージョンにおけるオルガン・ソロは，James Booker。

アルバム・タイトルが "The Best of King Curtis" となっているが，本人名義の作品は１枚目だけ。２枚目以降には King Curtis がセッションに参加した曲が収録されている。
Sonny Jackson という名前で歌っている曲(I-30. 31. 初 CD 化？ わざわざ別名で録音しているくらいなので，歌は上手くない (^_^;)) が収録されている１枚目が面白いのはもちろんだが，様々なレーベルで色々なジャンルのシンガーのバックで演奏している２・３枚目の方がより楽しめた。
中にはおなじみのシンガーやグループもあるが，Bobby Darin や Neil Sedaka，Waylon Jennings などのセッションにも参加していたとは・・・。
１９３４年生まれということだから，このアルバムでは最も古い II-2. の時点では１８歳だったということになる。ライナーノート(Dave Penny) によると，当時 Lowell Fulson のバンドに参加したこともあったらしい。ほとんどの曲が New York で録音されていて，同じ頃に Memphis や New Orleans などの南部で制作された楽曲に比べると，似たような曲調でもどことなくこぎれいでオシャレな感じがするのはなぜだろう？ 「空気」が違っているからだろうか？
King Curtis 名義でソロ・アルバムをリリースするようになるのは１９５９年からで，その当時の作品も廉価盤で楽しめるようになっている。
Sam Cooke "Eight Classic Albums Plus Bonus Singles (4 CDs)" と同じリイシュー専門のレーベルからのリリースで，ブックレットなどは付属しておらず，値段が安いのとケースが丈夫なことだけが取り柄のセットだが，表題の３枚組 CD の内容と重複するのは４曲(I-16. 20. 23. 29.) だけ。

Capitol 時代の King Curtis のセッションを集めたボックス・セット "Blow Man, Blow! (3 CDs)" の３枚目。11.〜 22. が，↓ のアルバムの収録曲。

↑ は，単独では CD 化されておらず，そのボックス・セットをかなり以前から Wishlist に入れてあったのだが，とある中古ショップにて \1,890 で発見。ただし，箱もブックレットも無い CD のみのセットで，中途半端な掘り出し物・・・(^_^;)
「仕事」を口実に，久しぶりに東京に出かけて一日ウロチョロした成果(?) の一つ。
この時代のベスト編集盤 CD には，11. と 18. が収録されている。

Dan Penn が Marlin Greene と書いた 'Far From The Maddening Crowd' という曲が，The Drifters の "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing"[1965] というアルバムに収録されていたので，この CD を注文したのだが，届いた CD には，その曲が入っていなかった・・・(?_?)
英 Sequel からリリースされた Anthology のシリーズは，ほぼ録音順に楽曲が収録され，サブタイトルとして表示されている LP とはほとんど関係がなかった。紛らわしいジャケ写を使わないでもらいたい・・・(^_^;)
くわしい収録曲のリストは，→ Drifters_Atl.xls
未入手の "Anthology １〜４" などのデータは，ネット上で検索して入力してある。
表題の CD に収録されているのは，１９６５年以降に Atlantic からリリースされたシングル曲。この時代の The Drifters は，ストーンズもカバーした 'Under The Boardwalk'[1964, R&B Singles: 4, Hot 100: 4] をピークにチャート上では下り坂だったが，楽曲そのものはなかなか面白く，十分楽しめた。
意外だったのが，Jimmy Hughes 'Steal Away' のカバー。１９６９年にリリースされたシングルで，Lead は Bill Fredericks。アレンジャーは Gary Sherman で，プロデュースは Jerry Williams,Jr. つまり Swamp Dogg が担当していた。
さらに意外だったのが Atlantic 最後のシングル(19. 20.) で，Syl Johnson のプロデュースによる Chicago 録音。↓ には，Chicago の香りは全く感じられないのだが・・・(^_^;)

The Holmes Brothers は，Wendell Holmes(Guitar/Piano, 1943-), Sherman Holmes(Bass, 1939-), Popsy Dixon(Drums, 1942-) の３人組で，ブルースのサウンドにゴスペルのハーモニーが基本のバンド。彼らのレパートリーは種々雑多で，Soul/R&B はもちろん，カントリーやロックも含まれている。
'60 年代からニューヨークのクラブで演奏していた Wendell と Sherman の兄弟が '70 年代の半ばに Popsy と知り合い，１９８０年頃から The Holmes Brothers として活動を始めている。
Joan Osborne とはその頃からの知り合いなのだそうだ。共演しているビデオ・クリップが Youtube にいろいろアップされているが，中でもお気に入りは，↓ の 'Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends'

１９９０年のデビュー以来，彼らは現在まで Rounder と Alligator を中心に，Peter Gabriel の Real World などから，編集盤も含めて１１枚のアルバムをリリースしており，表題の CD は２枚目(1991) にあたる。
１曲目が Sam Cooke のカバーで，アルバムタイトルも，その曲から取られている。
メンバーが自作したオリジナル曲とカバー曲が半々というのは，彼らのほとんどのアルバムに共通した構成。
Paul Kelly のクレジットがある 3. と 9. の内，9. は Mavis Staples の未 CD 化のアルバム "Oh, What A Feeling"(1979) に収録されているらしいが，3. の初出は・・・？
5. Tommy Tucker，6. Big Maceo，7. Johnny Ace，10. Hank Williams，11. Ray Charles は，それぞれのバージョンでおなじみだが，8. のオリジナルは誰・・・？

Black America と Black American の差はかなり大きいのでは・・・(^_^;)
たとえ「方針」を変更するにしても，Otis より Sam Cooke の方が先だろう・・・と，考えていて思い当たったのが，Jagger & Richards と Sam Cooke の共通点。つまり・・・ABKCO 。
英 Ace/KENT からリリースされている "Black America" をキーワードにしたアルバムは，他にも３点ある。

↑ の記事中に書いたように，'Change Is Gonna Come' で，Sam Cooke のオリジナルを使用することは，contractually「契約上」許可が下りていない・・・ということは・・・(^_^;)
前置きが長くなったが，この CD における目玉は，10. と 18. の未発表曲。どちらも，FAME の倉庫が Ace/KENT に開放されたことで目出度く発掘された作品。
特に，Arthur Conley については，まだまだアルバム１枚分以上の作品が眠っているはずなので，それらの CD 化もよろしくお願いしたい・・・m(_ _)m
Rick Hall のご子息が父親の再評価，名誉挽回のために頑張っておられるというのに，Allen Klein の息子は・・・(^_^;)

"The Commitments" An Alan Parker Film [MGM DVD GXBA-19906]
１９９１年に制作されたイギリス・アイルランド合作映画。
内容は，よくある，栄光と挫折の青春群像物語なのだが，題材となっているのは，アイルランドのダブリンにおけるソウル・バンド。
ソウル・バンドの結成を思い立った主人公が新聞広告で集めたメンバーに，「ソウル」とは何かを説明するときに見せたのが，↓ の James Brown のパフォーマンス。

JB に圧倒されて「これをやるには 俺たち シロすぎないか」としり込みするメンバーに，主人公が発したセリフは，
The Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland.
And the northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin.
So say it once, say it lound: I'm black an' I'm proud!
かつては北アイルランドの領有権を巡ってイギリスと敵対関係にあり，ヨーロッパの最貧国の一つとされてきたアイルランドだけれども，この映画が合作された '90年代には関係が修復し，EU やアメリカからの援助もあって目覚しい経済成長を遂げている。最近はヨーロッパ全体の経済の落ち込みに伴って深刻な事態に陥っているようだが・・・。
この映画では，劇中で演奏されている楽曲も非常に面白く，個人的には，DVD を鑑賞するよりサントラの CD を聴く回数の方がはるかに多い・・・(^_^;)
映画に出演している俳優が実際に演奏していることも，大きな魅力の一つ。映画とは別に演奏活動を行ったり，後に再結成してコンサートを開いたりもしている。
サントラ盤は２枚リリースされていて，その全てが映画の中で演奏されているわけではないが，劇中では編集されている楽曲も完全なものを楽しむことができる。
リード・ボーカルを担当していた Andrew Strong は，ソロ・アルバムもリリースしている。

Elvis Costello の１９８６年のアルバム "King Of America"(1.〜 15.) に，ボーナス・トラック(16.〜 20.) やボーナス・ディスクを追加してリリース(1995)された CD。
彼がカバーした 'It Tears Me Up' が収録されているのは，ボーナス・ディスクの方。
オリジナルな LP を紙ジャケ化したものが千数百円だったのに対して，このボーナス付きのセットは \700 ・・・(^_^)v
２００５年には，更にボーナス・トラックが加えられた CD もリリースされているらしい。
ボーナス・ディスクに収録されているのは１９８６年のライブで，バンドのメンバーは

↑ Youtube にあったが，こういうアップのやり方だと削除される可能性は少ないのだろうか・・・？
文学作品などの文字による著作物について「引用」が認められているように，楽曲についても合法的な「引用」の範囲を定めて明文化するのは無理なのだろうか・・・？
TPP には「知的財産権」に関する内容も含まれていて，著作権の侵害行為が非親告罪になるというような話もある。この先，一体どうなっていくのか，全く見当が付かない・・・(^_^;)

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell の３枚の LP "United"(1967)，"You're All I Need"(1968)，"Easy"(1969) に，未発表曲や Tammi Terrell のソロ・バージョンなどをボーナス・トラックとして追加した CD。
なぜか，日アマには CD １枚分のトラック・リストしか表示されていないが，'I'm Your Puppet' のカバーが収録されているのは，２枚目のほう。１９６９年に LP "Easy" の収録曲としてリリースされた。
まもなく，その作者による「デモ録音」が CD 化される。

もともと James & Bobby Purify という男性デュオの曲で，Sam & Dave や Mel & Tim も歌っているけれども，男と女のデュエットによるカバーは珍しい。カップルで，お互いがお互いの puppet というのは，少々不自然なような気もするが・・・？
この二人にしては，出来はもう一つ・・・(^_^;)
やはり，↓ が，ビデオ・クリップとしても，素晴らしい。

Randy Newman が音楽を担当した映画 "Meet the Parents"(2000) のサウンドトラック。
「結婚志願の男性と、その相手の女性の父親(ロバート・デ・ニーロ) がバトルを繰り広げるコメディ。」
Wiki によると，この続編の 『ミート・ザ・ペアレンツ2』"Meet the Fockers"(2004) は，「コメディ映画では，世界で最高の興行収入額を記録した」そうだ。「ジャンルはコメディであるが、愛や信頼といった人間関係を非常に上手に描き、最後は見る側に、爽やかな感動を与える作品」
見たことのない映画のサウンドトラックを購入する気になったのは，'I'm Your Puppet' の Bobby Womack によるカバーが収録されていたから。
その作者による「デモ録音」が，まもなくリリースされる。

残念ながら Youtube には見当たらなかったが，中古では安く出回っているようだし・・・(^_^;)
Randy Newman が 'Got My Mo Jo Working' を歌っているのを聴けるのは，このアルバムだけのはず・・・？
