廉価盤だが，丁寧なライナーノートと詳細な録音データを含むブックレットが付いていることで定評のある Proper からリリースされているボックス・セット。「ゴスペル入門」としては，最適かもしれない。
DISC IV　の冒頭に収録されている The Soul Stirrers の６曲のうち，Sam Cooke がリードを取っているのは１曲だけ。もちろん，Sam Cooke がゴスペルだけを聴きゴスペルだけに影響を受けていたわけではないし，ゴスペルそのものが世俗音楽とは無関係に独立して存在していたわけではないが，それでも，このボックス・セットを聴いていると，Sam Cooke という希代の表現者を生み出した豊穣な土壌を実感することができる。

Sam Cooke が歌っている 'Peace In The Valley' の作者としてクレジットされている Thomas A. Dorsey は，'It's Tight Like That' という曲を歌っていたブルース・マン Geogia Tom と同一人物。「ソレはアレのようにタイトである」という歌を歌っていた人間が「ゴスペルの父」と呼ばれているのだから，「ゴスペル」は，それほどありがたい音楽でもない・・・(^_^;)

２枚目のタイトルになっている 'Wade In The Water' という曲は，↓ によると「犬を連れた白人のハンターたちに追いかけられた時は，犬の嗅覚を混乱させるために川の中を歩けという指示」だったそうだ。

↑ の本で，「最後の１曲，素晴らしい慈悲の心」として紹介(p.233-)されているのが，ゴスペルの定番曲である 'Amazing Grace'。表題のボックス・セットには，Dixie Humminbirds のバージョン(II - 22.) が収録されている。

上記の本によると，'Amazing Grace' は，「黒人霊歌ではなく，イギリスまたはスコットランドの賛美歌のメロディーであ」り，「『地下鉄道』における黒人たちの『魂の叫び』や『北へ逃げる暗号』とは異なるが，白人の元奴隷船・船長ジョン・ニュートンが吐露する罪の告白と懺悔の『心の叫び』である。」
この曲の作者が奴隷船の元船長であることは知っていたが，その犯した「罪」の具体的な内容も，この本には書かれていた。(p.36)
「ジョン・ニュートンの船で運ばれる奴隷は『商品』として保険がかけられ，アフリカからアメリカに到着する頃には半数近くに減っているのが普通であった。航海の途中で少しでも病気の傾向が見られた奴隷は，不良品として保険がカバーしていたので，他の『商品』が傷まないようにすぐに海に投げ捨てられたからであった。奴隷船の船長としてのジョンは，人間性や神を畏れる宗教的な心は全く持ち合わせていなかった。」
'Amazing Grace' は日本でも，能天気な善男善女のコーラス・グループによってよく歌われる曲だけれども，その作者が犯した「罪」の内容を知って歌っている人は，はたしてどれくらいいるだろうか・・・？
