たとえレコード・プレイヤーが埃をかぶっていても，LP の詰まったエサ箱をときどき漁ることはあり，たま〜に掘り出し物に出会うことがある。
今回の収穫は，ず〜っと探していた Lou Rawls の Sam Cooke カバー集。
￥２Ｋ という値段は，個人的には非常に安い買い物だった (^_^)v
あのスレッドで紹介してもらった日本盤ではなく米盤で，ジャケ裏に Lou Rawls 自身によるなかなか興味深いライナーノートが掲載されていた。↓
I feel it would be unfair if I did not tell the world about nine soulful people. Their names are even soulful, but I will just say, "The Fame Gang." They have a love between one another so storng that they can look at each other and without music this is the sound they come up with. I walked into the studio, met the fellows, and I said, "Here's what I'm going to do." And I sang the songs to them without music. They said, "OK, give us a minute." And that's how it went down.
We struck a groove that is pure soul, using songs written by one of the most soulful young men in the history of soul music. I speak of a life-long friend, Sam Cooke. I won't go into a long drawn out story. I will only say that from the inspiration I drew from him it helped me a great deal in my own career, and I thank God for him. The Fame Gang is a whole other story in itself. You would not believe them for they are truly unbelievable. What you are about to hear is straight life, right from the soul. There were no arrangements, no far-out tricks with tapes or any of the new gimmicks being used in the recording industry today, just plain honest down-to-earth feeling. Listen closely to the words of the songs. Sam had a lot to say, and me and The Gang are trying to say it for him.

確かに，The Fame Gang のメンバーは９人だったようだが，いくつかの曲でフィーチャーされているハーモニカは，誰が吹いているのだろう？

久しぶりに，本当に久しぶりにプレイヤーの上にうずたかく積まれた本などを片付けて埃を払い，アナログ盤に針を落として聴いていたら，ちょっと興奮してしまった。
実は去年の夏，手元に残っているアナログ盤をデジタル化しようと，最も手ごろだった Sound BLASTER の Digital Music PX という製品を買ってはみたものの，雑事にかまけてその箱にも埃が積もっていたのだが，ちょっとやる気が出てきたかも・・・(^_^;)
CD 化されていない "Win Your Love" や "Chain Gang" などのアレンジはなかなかおもしろいし，"What Makes The Ending So Sad" は全く別のバージョンで，CD のクレジットを見ると，Previously unreleased, 1962 Lou Rawls and Les McCann Ltd. とあった。CD 化されたのは↓のアルバムと同時期の録音らしい。

例のスレッドで日本盤を紹介してくれた名盤さんのコメントは，「ディープソウルのファンには特に必要ないものって感じ」ということだったけれども，このサウンドこそが，本当の The Fame Gang の音なのではないか？ と思っているのだが・・・。
