昨年も年始に初めて中古ショップをハシゴしたときには大きな収穫 "From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music" があったが，今年もそれに勝るとも劣らぬ収穫があった。

１９９３年にリリースされた CD ４枚組のボックス・セットだけれども，廃盤になっていて，日アマゾンでは例によって法外な値段が付いているし，米アマゾンでもちょっと手の出ない値段であきらめていたのだが，とある中古ショップにてわずか￥３，９００で入手できた。しかも，かなりの美品 (^_^)v
LP サイズの箱に入っているとは思っていなかったので，危うく見逃すところだった。価格表示も，数字の頭の "１" を見落としているのではないかとヒヤヒヤしたが，大丈夫だった・・・(^_^;)

『ロックを生んだアメリカ南部』の「参考 CD 選」には，「アパラチアの古謡も，黒人の子どもの遊び歌も，聖別派の教会音楽も，白人霊歌も，すべて入っている。遠い国の遠い昔の音楽や語りだが，耳を澄ますと，彼らの世界が目の前に現れる。英文だが簡潔な解説も貴重。こういう仕事がルーツ・ミュージックへの関心を高めた」と，紹介されている。

１９５９年に Alan Lomax がアメリカ南部でフィールド・レコーディングした８時間余りの音源を４時間半ほどに編集・選曲したアルバム。

CD 化の際にライナーに付け加えられた Alan Lomax の序文は，『アラン・ローマックス選集』に「第３２章　南部の音 (pp.358-360)」として訳出されていた。それによると，・・・
１９３０年代から約２０年間，アメリカ南部を中心に現地録音を行い，民俗音楽の発掘を行ってその再評価の気運を高めた Alan Lomax がレッド・パージの嵐から逃れるためにヨーロッパに渡り，そこでも現地録音の仕事をした後，アメリカに戻ってみると，自分が仕掛けた「民謡リバイバルが最盛期を迎えていた」。ところが，その中心になっているニューヨークの「若いフォーク族」は，「死にかけている伝統を生き長らえさせていると信じて，英雄のような気分になってい」たので，「彼らが間違っていることを証明」するために，Atlantic Records の Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegan の援助を得て，「以前仕事をしたことのある生まれ故郷の南部に戻り，山地やバイユー(入り江)，刑務所，綿花畑の歌手たちを最新の機材で録音した」成果をまとめたのが，この "Sounds Of The South (4 CDs)" 。
１９５９年においても，アメリカ南部には「音楽の伝統の遺産がゆたかに残って」いて，そこでは「北西ヨーロッパと西アフリカの豊かで対照的な音楽文化が３００年以上にわたって共存しており」，「その正統的とはいえない所産－－ミンストレルの歌，霊歌，ラグタイム，ジャズ，ブルーズ，ブルーグラス，ケイジャン，カントリー，ゴスペル，そしてロック－－は地域的なものになり，それから国民的に，そして最後に国際的な表現になった」。
「こうした南部の音は黒人と白人のあいだの２世紀におよぶ友好的な音楽上の付き合いから生まれたものであり，ちょっとした文化的な成功と言うに等しい。こうした多文化的な民主主義が実際にどのように作動するのかについて，私たちが困難な実験を行い続けることによって，素晴らしくまた美しいものが生まれてくるという将来への希望を，この南部の音が表していると私は信じたいのである。」

黒人と白人の関係は，必ずしも「友好的」なものだけではなかったはずだが，Alan Lomax が残した遺産の偉大さを考えると，彼が信じたいという「希望」を否定することはできないだろう。

４枚の CD の内，とりわけ興味深いのが "DISC 3: NEGRO CHURCH MUSIC / WHITE SPIRITUALS" 。この CD だけ，はっきり黒と白に色分けされている。すでにアフリカとヨーロッパ(イギリス) の音楽的な要素の融合がかなり進んでいたとはいえ，やはり，途中で曲調ががらりと変化するのを聴きとることができる。
最近，特に気持ちよくてたまらないのが，この白人霊歌でも聴くことのできる，付かず離れず，近づいたり遠ざかったり，上になったり下になったり・・・というハーモニーやコーラス・・・(^_^;)

このボックス・セットに収録されているミュージシャンの内，後に有名になるのが Mississippi Fred McDowell 。

Bonnie Raitt にスライド・ギターの手ほどきをした人物として知られているけれども，Rolling Stones のファンには，"You Gotta Move" のオリジナルを歌っているブルース・シンガーとしておなじみのはず。

19. You Gotta Move

"You Gotta Move" というタイトルの曲は，Sam Cooke も録音していて，全体的な曲調や歌詞はかなり異なっているのだが，主題の部分は似通っているように聴こえる。さかのぼれば，同じルーツにたどりつくかも・・・？
Fred McDowell は１９６５年の録音で，Sam Cooke は１９６３年。
